How to Braid Hair with Extensions: Master the Art of Adding Volume & Length

When it comes to braiding, the world of extensions is an exciting opportunity. From adding texture and length to thin, thinning or damaged hair, to creating unique and complex hairstyles for special occasions, extensions can be used for almost any mane look. But it might feel overwhelming to learn how to use hair extensions to braid. After all, there are endless styles, sizes and colors to choose from, and the process can seem intimidating or confusing. But if you’re willing to explore and experiment with new techniques, you’ll be amazed by the variety of braid styles you can create with extensions.

There are two main techniques when it comes to braiding with extensions. The first is to start with a classic three-strand braid and then add extensions as you go – either woven into each loop of the braid, or added at the end. The second is to begin with an entire head of braided extensions, and then incorporate them into a traditional three-strand braid. Both approaches have distinct advantages and disadvantages, so choose the one that best suits your hair type and style.

Before you start braiding your extensions, it’s important to make sure you have the right supplies. You’ll need a tail comb to tease and separate the strands before braiding, styling products for added hold, and at least two colors of braiding hair extensions. The color of the extensions should complement your natural hair, but it’s always fun to experiment with something a bit bolder and brighter.

Once you’ve gathered your supplies, the next step is to properly prepare your natural hair. If you’re using individual extension strands, you’ll want to start with freshly washed and dried hair. Before starting to braid, use the tail comb to gently tease the hair at the roots to give it some grip – this will also help create a textured, voluminous look once you add the extensions. It’s also a good idea to give your hair a light misting with a flexible hairspray for extra hold.

The next step is to start braiding those extensions! If you’re working with individual strands, start by splitting your natural hair into three even sections. Take a strand of extension hair and loop it around the middle section of your hair. Now, continue braiding as you normally would but also incorporate the extension strand into your braid by passing it under and over the other strands, just like you would with your natural hair. When you reach the end of the braid, tie off with an elastic and gently tug on the braid to give it a thicker, more textured look.

If you’re using a pre-braided extension, start by separating the sections of hair near your scalp. Take two strands of your natural hair and lay them in a horizontal line, then create a loop across the top of your hair with the pre-braided extension. Now, tuck the two strands of natural hair around the center of the extension and start braiding as you normally would. As you work your way down, you should use your fingers to gently push the natural hair and the extensions together to create a seamless look.

No matter the technique you use, the last and most important step is to secure the end of your braid. If you’re using individual extensions, tie it off with an elastic band to make sure the braid stays in place. If you’re using a pre-braided extension, you can use a few small pins to hold it in place. Once your braid is secure, finish it off with a light misting of hairspray to set it in place.

Braiding with extensions is a great way to add texture and length to any hairstyle, and with some practice, it can quickly become second nature. Whether you’re using individual strands or pre-braided extensions, it’s a great way to take your hair game to the next level!
